Welcome our New Staff Members!
We would like to welcome to our staff Steve Petrahai (Marching & Brass) & Caty Whaley (Marching & Body Sculpting)!
Stephen Petrahai is a 2013 Bunnell graduate who was a trumpet player, drum major, John P. Souza award recipient, and varsity baseball player.
After graduating BHS, he spent 3 years at Temple University, 2 of which were spent at the Boyer School of music. At Boyer, Stephen worked towards a B.A. in music therapy with a trumpet concentration studying under Eric Schweingruber and David Bilger, Philadelphia Orchestra trumpet and principal trumpet. Stephen transferred to engineering school in in the Fall of 2015 and moved home to study at the University of New haven in the Spring of 2017, where he would ultimately graduate with a B.S. in mechanical engineering and a minor in music.
In his time at Temple, Stephen was a member and section leader in the Temple University Diamond Marching Band. The TUDMB performs up to 9 different halftime shows every football season. This accounts for 6 home halftime shows at Lincoln Financial Field, high school exhibitions, away game performances — including UCONN, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Rutgers — and postseason bowl games including the Boca Raton Bowl and the Military bowl at Annapolis.
Caty “Cart” Whaley, a 2016 Graduate of Stratford HS, has been involved in the marching arts since 2011. Their marching experience includes; Bunnell High School (2011–2015), University of New Haven (2016–2018), 7th Regiment (2018–2019), and the Blue Stars (2020–2021). Caty’s passion for the marching arts continues with their involvement in the visual instruction and design with various Connecticut high schools, and hopes to spread their excitement to the activity to her current and future students.

It’s simple! Follow these steps (more details on the links above)
1 — send (email) the ad form to relatives anywhere in the US. Send to Businesses (print and bring to local businesses)
2 — Get the artwork & payment
3 — send that in ASAP!
4 — try and sell just THREE full page ads and that will take care of your financial obligation for the Fall 2022!
5 — BUT — sell more, especially if you will be participating in Indoor Drumline, Indoor Guard or if we take an extended overnight trip. All extra funds will go into an account for you to use in the future for any band activities!

Marching Basics are Wednesday this week. (and every Wednesday until Band Camp). 6p-7:45p — please bring your instruments!

First year members should take a second part (except trumpets — please take 3rd). The ONLY difference between a first or second part is that, one plays higher notes than 2.

Band Camp — Aug 22–26
Begins August 26. Monday through Friday (Friday is an option that we have NEVER needed!) — 6:45am — 3:45pm.
There will be a Family picnic on Thursday evening around 5pm. (More details to follow…)
Sports Tryouts
Students may be excused for Sports Tryouts. 100% on Friday, but we ask you to split the time, should you have a tryout on Thursday, or any other day.
Please inform your coach that you will also have to attend our first performance at 5p on Thursday evening.
Band Camp Checklist:

__ A Prompt Arrival! (Please be at the door to the band room at 6:45am, as we start promptly at 7am)
Don’t worry if you are missing anything, or if you don’t have everything memorized — we will make sure everyone is complete on Monday at camp.
A typical day at Band Camp would look like this:
6:45am — report to the side door of the school where the band room is.
7:00am — section leader/staff/officer meetings.
7:15am — full band meeting
7:20am — stretching/warm ups/basic marching on the field, percussion on their own.
8:00am — Start drill sets. Goal — learn one song each day. Water breaks along the way.
12pm — lunch
12:30pm — Sectionals.
1:15pm — Full music ensemble.
2:00pm — drill on the field. This is where you put the music into the drill sets you learned that day.
3:45pm — clean up/meetings.
4:00pm — dismissed.
Students should make every effort to show up to camp with their music memorized. If you are a first year member and having trouble memorizing — DO NOT WORRY — we will help you at camp. This is the time of the year when, typically, students get anxious about starting HS. PLEASE, make an effort and attend the camp — if you are still hesitant at the end of camp, we will work something out — BUT please do not drop band at this point! Every member who receives this email will have a spot and is needed!

¡Bienvenidos a nuestros nuevos miembros del personal!
¡Nos gustaría dar la bienvenida a nuestro personal a Steve Petrahai (Marcha y latón) y Caty Whaley (Marcha y escultura corporal)!
Stephen Petrahai se graduó de Bunnell en 2013 y fue trompetista, baterista mayor, ganador del premio John P. Souza y jugador universitario de béisbol.
Después de graduarse de BHS, pasó 3 años en la Universidad de Temple, 2 de los cuales los pasó en la Escuela de música Boyer. Campamento de banda — 22 al 26 de agosto
Comienza el 26 de agosto. De lunes a viernes (¡el viernes es una opción que NUNCA hemos necesitado!) — 6:45am — 3:45pm.
Habrá un picnic familiar el jueves por la noche alrededor de las 5:00 p. m. (Más detalles a seguir…)
Pruebas Deportivas
Los estudiantes pueden ser excusados para las pruebas deportivas. 100% el viernes, pero le pedimos que divida el tiempo, si tiene una prueba el jueves o cualquier otro día.
Informe a su entrenador que también tendrá que asistir a nuestra primera actuación a las 5:00 p. m. el jueves por la noche.

Un día típico en Band Camp sería así:

13:15 — Conjunto musical completo.
2:00pm — simulacro en el campo. Aquí es donde pones la música en los conjuntos de ejercicios que aprendiste ese día.
3:45 pm — limpieza/reuniones.
4:00 pm — despedido.
Los estudiantes deben hacer todo lo posible para llegar al campamento con su música memorizada. Si eres miembro de primer año y tienes problemas para memorizar — NO TE PREOCUPES — te ayudaremos en el campamento. Esta es la época del año en que, por lo general, los estudiantes se ponen ansiosos por comenzar la preparatoria. POR FAVOR, haga un esfuerzo y asista al campamento — si aún tiene dudas al final del campamento, solucionaremos algo — PERO, ¡no abandone la banda en este punto! ¡Cada miembro que reciba este correo electrónico tendrá un lugar y es necesario!
